Russell Matthew May was born on February 9, 1978, the son of Herbert and Rosemarie (Munson) May of rural Browerville. Russell “Russ” was the youngest of sixteen children, he capped off the family tree as the entertainer. Even as a child, Russ was outgoing and made others laugh and smile. In high school, he was a tiger on the wrestling mat and graduated from Browerville High School in 1996. He took over the farm with his brother, Ted, in 2000 and continued farming full-time through 2016. Even after starting his last job at Long Prairie Packing, he continued to help out farming wherever and whenever he could. Having been raised on a farm, Russ had a natural yearning for the outdoors. He enjoyed his time on the farm, as well as in the woods stirring up pheasants and squirrels, or in a deer stand waiting for the “big one”. Often, he could be seen out just driving along the countryside keeping track of the scenery and stopping at any place that had a light on to sit and chat for hours on end. Goofball is a word that often is attached to a story describing Russ. He loved to have a good time! Always making sure others were enjoying the event and making people laugh. His outgoing nature made him an easy person to have a conversation with, and you only met him once as a stranger, leaving the conversation as a friend.
He was a member of the local feedstore board for several years and also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. On March 13, 1999, Russ married Kelli Berg. Their union was blessed with five of the most strong and resilient young ladies, Taylor, Harley, Marah, Leona, and Raynn. These ladies have a special angel in heaven watching over them. His fierce love and pride towards them was evident, and they will cherish memories with him, especially his goofy side in their hearts and the smiles on their faces forever.
On Sunday, December 1, 2024, Russ’s time on earth ended. He leaves behind his daughters, Taylor (Logan) Knutson, Harley May, Marah (Fiancé Nate Petermeier) May, Leona May, and Raynn May; siblings, Albert May of Gilmer, TX, Rosemarie (Dennis) Schahn of Kenyon, Kay (Scott) Leland of Dayton, Beth (Jeff) Brown of Browerville, Mike (Jean) May of Browerville, June Willemsen (Glenn Pauls) of Watkins, Judy (Mark) Walker of Richmond, Ted May of Browerville, Annette (Scott) Feist of Sauk Centre, Jim (Taralee) May of Browerville, Mary (Bill) Lisson of Long Prairie, Joan (Bob) Schueller of Browerville, Julie (Chris) Benning of Browerville, Jenni George of Osakis, Jacqui (Mark) Schmidtbauer of Osakis. As well as the numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He is joined in heaven with his parents, Herbert and Rosemarie “Topsy” May; brother-in-law, Chris George; nephews, Herbie Brown and Dalton May.
