Rena Halbersma was born on the family farm near Inwood, Iowa on September 11, 1929 to Jorienus and Artie (Brands) Brouwer. She attended the Inwood Public School until 1942 when the family moved to Rock Valley, Iowa. She finished 7th & 8th grades in a rural country school and later in life completed her GED. In 1946 the family moved to a farm near Edgerton, Minnesota.
