Judith Sherry Hill passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023, at the Long Prairie Nursing Home at the age of 80. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Peace United Church in Long Prairie with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at a later time at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.
Judith was born right in the middle of her family in northern Minnesota. Gatzke, Minnesota was home to Herman and Evelyn (Paetznick) Severts who raised 3 boys and 3 girls. Three of the Severts kids headed to Long Prairie to find work when they came of age. Hart’s Press and a couple of waitressing jobs kept Judy busy. She met Gordon Hill and the two of them headed to the cities for work and to get married, March of 1962. They started their family in the metro, Tim, born in 1962, and Debbie arriving in 1963.
Judy loved flowers. Her flower beds were grand in Bloomington, the envy of every neighbor. When Judy was mowing and cut her toes off, Gordy and the neighbor built the flower bed up so Judy could safely mow and keep the yards beautiful. She started volunteering at the elementary school kitchen, enjoying the atmosphere and the action. She was hired and enjoyed that job immensely.
The family moved to rural Long Prairie in 1977, moving to the farm Gordy had been raised on. Besides her flowers, Judy became a pig farmer. She started her herd with a boar from her Dad’s drove. She delighted in the new found passion. Judy was a wonderful cook. She could make a banquet out of fried potatoes and sausage, especially when she added her fantastic baked bread. Homemade pizzas were a favorite of her family. Gordy and Judy enjoyed their life on the farm. The rural life suited them well. Gordy died in 2009. Judy stayed on the farm until 2012 when she moved to Florida with Tom and Deb, taking with her two dogs and two cats. She made Valley View her home when she returned to Long Prairie that spring.
Preceding Judy in death are her parents, husband, Gordon; siblings, Marshall (Bonnie); Zona, and Larry.
Judy enjoyed life and people enjoyed her. Left to miss her spirit and her good baking, are Tim of Wisconsin and Deb (Tom) Casey of Long Prairie, MN; grandsons, Corey Hill and Roy Casey; siblings, Alan (Sandy) of Gatzke; and Dianne Kenworthy of Indiana; Sisters-in-law, Karen of Fairfax, MN; several nieces and nephews.
