Hilary "Larry" Haasser Obituary

Hilary "Larry" Joseph Haasser passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 88. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie, MN with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 10:40 AM prior to the visitation. Immediately following the service, interment and Military Honors will be at Christ the King Cemetery in Browerville, MN.

Larry was born to Edmund and Marie (Siegle) Haasser in Long Prairie, MN on September 3, 1935. He attended St. Mary’s of Mount Carmel Grade School and graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1953. Larry worked on the family farm until he entered into service in the United States Army in 1955. He was stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany as a tank mechanic, earning Sharpshooter (rifle) and Marksman (rifle) honors, and playing Army football and basketball.

On June 5, 1962, Larry and Helen JoAnn Urban were united in holy matrimony at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Browerville, MN. They were married for 48 years, residing on a hobby farm in rural Eagle Bend, MN until 2003. Here they raised their four children, and Larry fostered his love of farming. Larry, fondly known as “Tiny” by his coworkers and friends, was a lifelong heavy equipment operator and a 51 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49. Whether on a bulldozer, a tractor, or a riding lawn mower, Larry, always the country boy at heart, loved spending time outdoors communing with nature—hunting, fishing, trapping, farming, and traveling to national parks/historic battlegrounds in his spare time.

Larry was a devout Catholic and a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clarissa, MN and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud, MN. Blessed with a charitable heart and a knack for fixing almost anything, Larry was the person to call when help was needed. Larry was also the person to call when you just wanted to talk. He loved to talk.

Larry is survived by his children, Michael (Lori Jo) Haasser, Linda Haasser, Patrick (Christine) Haasser, and Timothy (Patricia) Haasser; granddaughter, Alexandra Haasser; siblings, Joan Haasser, Claire Primus, Ralph (Janice) Haasser, Anthony (Sandra) Haasser, Lester (Gloria) Haasser, and Elaine Hasselbring. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; brother, Joseph Haasser; and brother-in-laws, Norbert Hasselbring and Roman Primus.
