On March 16, 1938, luck struck early for Martin and Mary (Salter) Christensen, their son Harvey LeRoy was born. Harvey would graduate from Canby High School. After high school Harvey attended Moorhead State and South Dakota State University obtaining his teaching degree. On November 23, 1961, Harvey married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Reynolds. The couple moved to Browerville, where Harvey started his teaching career. Their plan was to stay for a few years and move, but the small town embraced the young family, and they stayed a lifetime raising their two daughters, Wendi and Kelli. Harvey taught science for the school district. He also was the driver’s education instructor, athletic director, community education director, and being an athlete himself, he coached football, basketball and baseball. When he was not working, he enjoyed playing softball with the local men’s league, golfing, fishing and spending time with his family.
Harvey was rarely without a smile, his kind approachable demeanor made him a respected teacher, mentor and friend to share life with. He was selfless and humble. Harvey served his country in the Minnesota National Guard, being a weekend warrior, he felt was his duty. He retired from the National Guard after thirty plus years as a Chief Warrant Officer. In his downtime he enjoyed hunting, fishing camping and picking blueberries with the kids. This father, grandpa, mentor and friend will be deeply missed by the many people he met in his 86 years here on earth.
