Dale was born in Minneapolis. At a young age, he and his family moved to Long Prairie, where they rented a farm for a few years before Orville and Berniece purchased their own farm near Browerville. Dale grew up in Browerville, attended Browerville Public Schools, and graduated from Browerville High School in 1962.
In the fall of 1962, Dale moved to Minneapolis and joined the U.S. National Guard. He was honorably discharged in 1968. He drove truck for Sterling Cartage and later for Freightmasters Logistics until 1989, when he and Pat Ferraro purchased and operated the Red Barn Campground and Resort in Sauk Centre.
Dale met Nancy Costikyan while working at Modern Medicine. They were married in 1965 and remained together until Nancy's passing in 1988. Dale later met Pat Ferraro, and they shared many years together. Most recently, Dale was living with Pat in East Grand Forks until July 2025, when he moved to a memory care center due to declining health.
Dale enjoyed playing softball and baseball, golfing, hunting, and fishing. He was a devoted New England Patriots fan. He also had a special place in his heart for dogs and cats, regularly taking in and feeding neighborhood strays.
Dale is survived by his partner, Patricia Ferraro; his daughter, Lisa Knutson; his son, Drew Johnson; his grandchildren, Ryan Ogorek, Mady Ogorek, and Kyan Johnson; his sister, RoseAnn Weinmann; his sister-in-law, Clara Johnson; and many extended family members.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Berniece Johnson; his brothers, Kenton and Daniel Johnson; and his wife, Nancy.
