Cleo Carter, 93, of Clarissa passed away on May 31, 2019. Funeral services for Cleo will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019, 1:00 p.m., at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Clarissa with Pastor Justin Hesterman officiating. Friends may call on the day of the funeral one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at the Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria.
Cleo was born March 12, 1926, in Hewitt, to Alford & Netty (South) Cummings. She worked in the shipyards in Washington and for many years owned and operated many restaurants where she enjoyed cooking. Cleo married Warren Wentland in 1945. After Warren’s passing, she married Harold Carter in 1950. Cleo spent several years with Dean Bennett. In 1976, she met Wesley Schmidt, her life partner, they moved to Clarissa in 1985; Cleo remained in Clarissa until her death.
Cleo’s hobbies included gardening, fishing, crocheting, getting her suntan, going on casino trips, playing bingo and reminiscing about her life. She loved heath bars and apples and was a very loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. Cleo was known at the care center as the “Queen”.
Cleo is preceded in death by her parents, husband Warren, son Michael, siblings: Don Cummings, twin Leo Cummings, Deloris Tanchott, John Riggs and Billy Riggs.
Cleo is survived by her children: Doris Klegin, Warren “Butch” (Ellen) Carter, Gary Carter, Larry Carter and Robin Carter; 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren; sister Gloria Stewart, sisters-in-law Helen Riggs and Elsie Riggs.
