James Alan Abers was born on Augst 15, 1942, the son of Calvin Sr. and Marguerite (Pederson) Abers of rural Osakis. He graduated from Osakis High School. When Jim was fourteen years
old, he moved out of his parents’ home and into a cabin at Ferris Resort. When he was not at school, he was their full-time dock boy. After high school he worked a few different jobs. He worked for Alexandria Boat Works, started his own phone company, started his own land development company and held a real estate license. Having lived on the lake for part of his childhood, he fell in love with being an angler. Whenever Jim could, he would hop in the boat or go out to a riverbank and go fishing. On October 14, 1961, Jim married his greatest catch, Joan Lomheim, at the Sauk Centre Lutheran Church. Three prized daughters were born to this union, Tammy, Jackie and Gwinette. The couple raised their daughters at their Osakis Lake home, teaching them to enjoy the peace of living on the lake. When Jim was not working or fishing, as a young adult he drove race cars at the local racetrack. Jim and Joan often could be found together doing the hobbies they love. They both enjoyed riding snowmobiles, deer hunting, traveling, especially going on cruises all over the world. Jim liked to catch turtles and was the best night crawler guy around!
Jim threw his last cast on Friday, March 8, 2024, at the age of 81. Waiting patiently for him in heaven were his wife, Joan; parents, Calvin and Marguerite Abers; daughter, Jackie (Abers)
Amundson; and granddaughter, Cagney Reve’ Reis.
Left behind to mourn his loss are his daughters, Tammy (Paul) Reis, and Gwinette Cowan; grandchildren, Wesley (Lindsay) Reis, Cole (Kyla) Reis, Alexia (Mike) Menth, Taylor Amundson, Grant Cowan, Taya Cowan; great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Caleb, Ryder and Violet; Siblings, Tonoa (Robert) Herrebrugh-Abers, Calvin (Joyce) Abers Jr., Charles “Chuck” (Janie) Abers; Sister- in-law, Carol Jaros. many nieces, nephews and friends.
