Russell Frederick, 86, of Long Prairie, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 20, 2018. Funeral services for Russell will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018, 11:00 a.m., at the Iten Funeral Home in Browerville with Pastor Brian Casey officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the Iten Funeral Home in Browerville and on the day of the funeral one hour prior to the service.
Russell was born April 20, 1932, in Westport, MN to Reeve & Lulu (Judkins) Frederick. He graduated from Villard High School in 1950. Russell worked 30+ years at Prudential Life Insurance Company where he advanced from Commissary to the positions of Computer Room Manager and Systems Analyst where he was responsible for hardware set up and the design of the computer room. He also held various other jobs: Moon Valley gravel pit, ski lodge, truck driving, rifle sighting, snow plowing and many other odd jobs. On July 23, 1955, Russell married Orletta Gritz of Staples, MN. They lived in Plymouth, MN until 1965 when they moved into the house he built himself in Chanhassen. In 1996 they retired to their farm in Long Prairie, which Russell called ‘Lonesome Pine’, where he enjoyed his wife and children.
Russell was a hard worker and wanted to be a farmer; dabbling in farming with horses, oats, corn, and hay. He loved to work on machines, mow lawn, blow snow, hunt prairie dogs, hunt and watch the deer, and play Yahtzee. Russell loved his farm where he added to the house, rebuilt the barn, and did a lot of clean up. He enjoyed cutting firewood and making trails on the farm.
Russell is survived by: his wife Orletta of Long Prairie; two siblings: Byron (Lou) Frederick of Diamond, MO and Roger (Bea) Frederick of Vining, MN; seven children: Daniel Frederick of Long Prairie, Jeffrey Frederick of Chaska, Cherry (Martin) Nelson of Cambridge, OH, Michael (Alexandra) Frederick of Brookings, OR, Mark Frederick of Long Prairie, Robin Hendrickson of Chaska, and Jessie (Brent) Nelson of NC; seven grandchildren: Trevor (Natalie) Frederick, Zachary (Kelley) Dale, Leona Launderville, Caden Hendrickson, Emily Launderville, Jake Launderville, Shane Hendrickson, Cloey Hendrickson and Claire Hendrickson; one great-grandchild: Alexander Frederick.
Russell will forever be known for: his exceptional mathematical aptitude, mechanical knowledge, strong presence, and reliability. He was a responsible and dependable provider who had enormous hands, a gentle spirit, and overpowering physical strength.
