Vivian Edina Freie, 87 of Long Prairie died on Monday, November 19, 2007, at the Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home.  Funeral services for Vivian were held on Saturday, November 24, 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie with Reverend Paul Biegner officiating.  Interment will be held at Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery.

 

Vivian was born on April 10, 1920 in Rose City to Edwin and Ada (Lundquist) Engdahl. She attended country school in Rose City.  She loved school and helping others.  Vivian moved to Minneapolis to work at a knitting factory during WWII and later worked at Grant’s Department Store. She moved to Denver, Colorado where she continued to work at Grant’s.  Vivian returned to Long Prairie and married Harlan Freie in 1949.  They were blessed with 2 children, Loren and Byron.  After her marriage, Vivian worked various jobs in Long Prairie, including Betty’s Drapery, Hart Coast-Coast, Holiday and Coborns Grocery Store. 

 

Vivian attended Trinity Lutheran Church, was a den mother with the Cub Scouts, and active in many drives and fund raisers.

 

Life was not always easy, Vivian grew up during the depression and struggled alone with a newborn son when the Korean War called Harlan back into service, but she never stopped joking and trying to make others laugh.  She loved to read and play cards and was a devoted wife, parent and grandparent.  Vivian just recently became a great grandparent.  She will be dearly missed.

 

Vivian is survived by her husband Harlan, sons:  Loren (Marilyn) and Byron “Buck” (Donna), siblings:  Audrey Cady, George Engdahl, Ronald Engdahl, grandchildren:  Lori Ruda, Doug Freie, Greg Freie, Jenni Freie and 3 great grandchildren.  

 

Vivian is preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Evelyn Goodrich, Marjorie Engdahl, brothers, Douglas, Elliot, Gilbert, Reynold and 1 infant brother.
